  • 3 9-inch pie dish
  • 4 Knife or apple slicer
  • 5 Vegetable peeler
  • 6 Measuring cups and spoons
  • 7 Pastry cutter or fork
  • 8 Baking tray
  • 9 Pastry brush (for egg wash)

Ingredients

  • For the Pie Crust
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter cut into cubes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 6 –8 tablespoons ice water
  • For the Apple Filling
  • 6 –7 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Optional for topping:
  • 1 egg for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pie Dough

  • Start by making the pie crust.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  • Add the cold butter cubes to the mixture.
  • Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the texture looks like coarse crumbs.
  • Slowly add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  • Divide the dough into two equal portions.
  • Wrap them in plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes.
  • Chilling the dough helps create a flaky and tender crust.

Step 2: Prepare the Apple Filling

  • While the dough is chilling, prepare the apple filling.
  • Peel and slice the apples into thin pieces.
  • Place the apple slices in a large bowl.
  • Add sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  • Mix everything well so the apples are evenly coated.
  • The flour helps thicken the filling while baking.

Step 3: Roll the Dough

  • After chilling the dough, take one portion out of the refrigerator.
  • Sprinkle some flour on your working surface.
  • Roll the dough into a 12-inch circle using a rolling pin.
  • Carefully place the rolled dough into a 9-inch pie dish.
  • Press it gently into the dish and trim the edges if necessary.
  • This will be the bottom crust of your pie.

Step 4: Add the Apple Filling

  • Now it’s time to add the apple mixture.
  • Pour the prepared apple filling into the pie crust.
  • Spread the apples evenly.
  • Add small pieces of butter on top of the apples.
  • Butter adds richness and enhances the flavor of the pie.

Step 5: Add the Top Crust

  • Take the second portion of dough and roll it out just like the first one.
  • You have two options:

Option 1: Full Top Crust

  • Place the rolled dough over the filling.
  • Seal the edges with the bottom crust.
  • Cut small slits on top to allow steam to escape.

Option 2: Lattice Top

  • Cut the dough into strips.
  • Arrange the strips in a crisscross pattern.
  • A lattice crust gives the pie a beautiful and classic look.

Step 6: Brush and Bake

  • Before baking, brush the top crust with beaten egg and sprinkle a little sugar.
  • This helps the crust turn golden and shiny.
